Overview

Help us raise a new record of donations for local food shelves!

This event is close to home for all of us here at Tri Fitness.

First, it’s right in our backyard - Fast Before the Feast is hosted from Tri Fitness in White Bear Lake. We’re part of a wonderful community of neighborhoods and businesses.

Second, and more importantly, we’re aware of and deeply affected by the growing hunger problem at both the local and national levels.

According to Hunger Solutions MN, 1 in 17 Minnesotans rely upon local food shelves to help feed their families. In 2010, there were two million visits and 47 million pounds of food distributed at Minnesota’s 300 food shelves.

Due to the recent economic crisis, more and more families are seeking assistance. The latest statistics show that 1 in 6 Americans is food insecure. Even more shocking is that 1 in 4 children lives in a food-insecure household.

We believe it is absolutely vital that we increase our efforts as a business, a family, and a part of this community towards reducing this problem. We want to be real, we want to have an impact and we want to be relevant.

But we can't do it alone.

We’re inviting you to join us in this opportunity to be a part of this outpouring of individuals and families across all demographics who are volunteering their resources like never before.  Since the race’s inception, you have helped us donate over 20,000 pounds of food to local food shelves. In 2013, we were able to raise 9556 pounds and over $2,000!   In 2014, our goal will be to break into that magic 10,000 lbs!

Perhaps in the holiday season, more than at any other time, our hearts go out to others. But there are always those who areless fortunate than we are and will appreciate our help all year round. Please consider giving what you can regularly to the charities that make a difference to your local and national community. You may be surprised at the benefits you reap!

Course Profile and Policies

The course for both races starts behind the training center, proceeds south through the parking area of the White Bear Sports Center and roams around the quaint neighborhood streets, eventually returning to the training center.

Both courses stay away from major roads and are mostly flat except for one hill near the beginning that runners get to climb and descend twice. Both courses are great for beginners, and the more elite runners should find them moderately fast.

Fluid replacement (water and HEED) will be available at the Start/Finish lines for both races (both races begin and end at the same place), and will also be available at the turn-around (halfway) point of the 10k.  Volunteers will be stationed throughout the course and at critical areas.

This run starts behind the Tri Fitness Training Center (West side) and heads south on Sports Center Drive, and through the parking lot of the White Bear Lake Sports Center until it intersects Birch Lake Blvd.

From there, runners wind through the neighborhood streets until they come to White Bear Pkwy.  Runners follow this east until they come to Otter Lake Rd, where they head south.  Otter Lake Rd quickly forks and runners should bear right onto Schuneman Rd.

It's a straight shot from here to the turn-around point (almost to the very end of the road).  Once runners turn around, they'll follow the same course back to White Bear Pkwy. Runners will eventually hang a right, back onto Birch Lake Blvd, and then return to the start/finish line, via the same path through the WBL Sports Center parking lot.

This run starts behind the Tri Fitness Training Center (West side) and heads south on Sports Center Drive, and through the parking lot of the White Bear Lake Sports Center until it intersects Birch Lake Blvd.  Runners continue to White Bear Parkway for about a block, until they take a left on Bibeau Rd.

From there, runners wind through the neighborhood streets until they come to White Bear Pkwy.  Runners follow this West, all they back Birch Lake Blvd, and then return to the start/finish line, via the same path through the WBL Sports Center parking lot.

FINISH

The finish area, where spectators and finishers can gather, watch and cheer, will be located behind the training center, in the parking lot adjacent to the start/finish line.

Volunteers will assist in removing race number tags or timing chips.  Bottled water, HEED, fresh fruit and other post-race snacks will be provided.

POLICIES

Headphones:  Yes, they are allowed.  Please be aware that this is an open course, so be extra careful about watching for traffic and your fellow participants.

Strollers:  Yes, they are allowed.  Please start near the back of the pack for the safety of your little one and your fellow participants.  If you're super fast even with a stroller, then you can start farther up at the start line, but please situate yourself near one side or the other and avoid the middle.

Pets:  Yes, they are allowed.  Dogs, anyway.  Monkeys and pythons are discouraged.  Please only bring your pet if they're friendly and not freaked out by a thousand people, and start at the back of the pack.

Refund / Cancellation Policy

This policy has been created in fairness to all the athletes so that equal opportunity exists for registering for all Tri Fitness events.

Tri Fitness reserves the right to cancel or re-schedule an event in the event of inclement weather, emergency, or natural disaster.  In the event of such a cancellation, there will be no refund of entry or processing fees.   If Tri Fitness decides to cancel an event for reasons under our control, entry fees will be refunded to existing registrants.

There are no race transfers on race day, even if a registered athlete is a no-show and a slot is available.  This is to ensure that events start on time, for safety considerations and event management.

Severe Weather

There is a chance of inclement weather. The safety of our participants, volunteers, spectators, police and everyone else is our top priority, so we may need to make race-day adjustments.

The race director will have NOAA weather alerts via phone and walkie-talkie, and will monitor any severe weather alerts.  All volunteers will watch for lightning and alert the director immediately if they see it.  We will be following a 30-30 policy, which is: if we witness a flash of lightning, and hear thunder within 30 seconds, then we will delay the race by 30 minutes. Everyone should avoid any metal objects or tall, solitary objects and head to their car if possible.

The roads will almost certainly be wet in that case.   Please watch for slick roads and standing water.

In the case of lightning during the course of the event, we may have to cancel and pull participants off the course. This will be the responsibility of the sag wagon and other volunteers as we can afford.   We will work to notfiy all participants currently on the course that the event is being canceled.

There are no refunds or transfers in the event we have to cancel the race, though we reserve the right to issue a transfer via email to registered participants. It is the absolute last option, but we have to have everyone's safety in mind.

Partial Refunds

Transfers

Under certain circumstances, race transfers can occur for an event within the same calendar year. A race transfer is defined as transferring an athlete’s registration to another race for any reason.

A race transfer can occur under the following conditions:

  • The request to transfer out of a race must be made 14 days or more prior to that scheduled event date.  No transfers will be allowed underneath this deadline unless there are extenuating circumstances.
  • Extenuating circumstances: If you have an injury (verified by a doctor's order) or a member of your immediate family has a death or a medical emergency and it is within 14 days of the scheduled event yet greater than 72 hours prior to the event, you will need to notify us in writing.  The race director will consider each request on a case by case basis after the event, for credit towards a future Tri Fitness event within the same calendar year.   No credits will be issued with less than 72 hours prior written notice to the event.
  • Transfers can be made to any race owned by Tri Fitness and list on our Events page.   Race transfers are only allowed once per person, per season.
  • Credit for the transfer will be based solely on the entry fee paid, and not inclusive of processing fees, etc.
  • If the race to which you are transferring has a higher entry fee as of the date of the transfer, you must pay the difference by making out a check to Tri Fitness.
  • There is a $5 fee to refund or transfer for any race and for any reason

Considerable effort goes into producing an event and funds are expended and applied in good faith based on a registration. Transferring two weeks out from an event can be managed, but under the two week limit a transfer causes considerable issues, both monetarily and organizationally as packets have been prepared with sized t-shirts, chip numbers have been requested based on the athlete’s entry, and perhaps a race has been closed in which a transfer would bar another athlete from entering the event.

Thank you very much for your understanding of this policy and thank you also for your participation in Tri Fitness events.
